Travel to the San Francisco Bay Area

Flights

San Francisco is a major cultural and economic hub located on the west coast of the United States. It is served primarily by San Francisco International Airport (SFO), an international airport that offers more than 1,060 flights per day on almost 50 airlines, providing nonstop service to more than 130 destinations worldwide. SFO is a major base for United Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Attendees may also consider flying into Oakland International Airport (OAK) or San José Mineta International Airport (SJC), which are a short distance to San Francisco and may offer affordable flight options.

Local Transit

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) serves the area with 50 stations that operate in five counties (San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, and Santa Clara). Travelers can take BART from SFO or OAK to downtown San Francisco, and can also use the system to get to different regions of the Bay Area for host museum visits. Within San Francisco, the Muni transit system serves the entire city.

San Francisco also offers several unique options for getting around the region:

  • Take the ferry to Sausalito to visit the Bay Area Discovery Museum, or to Oakland to start your visit to the Chabot Space and Science Center or Lawrence Hall of Science.
  • Hop on an historic Cable Car to access many of San Francisco’s most iconic tourist destinations, including the Exploratorium.
  • Get a preview of the rideshare of the future by hailing a Waymo driverless car (make sure to download the app ahead of time).
  • Borrow an e-scooter or e-bike for a quick ride around San Francisco’s bike-friendly streets (Lime typically has an abundance of options in downtown San Francisco).

Hotels

ASTC is pleased to offer access to discounted hotel accommodations for the ASTC 2025 Annual Conference.
